"It was mid- August when I decided to go to Seoul to study TESOL. Summer Olympic games were going on in Beijing and we had not much to do during the Olympic in Kunming, except watching the games on T.V. So I purchased an airline ticket and in just less than a week from my decision, my study started at Times-tesol at Gangnam. After 7 weeks of hard work, I completed the course successfully and got the TESOL certificate. Upon completion of my study I returned home to Kunming where my wife was waiting for me. Then another 6 weeks passed. I did not have any immediate plan to teach English in school when I came home. The chance came to me suddenly. During a casual conversation with one of the Korean students who studies ¡®Chinese Traditional Tea¡¯ at the Yunnan Agricultural University, he told me there`s a need for good foreign English teacher at this university and he knows people who hire foreign teachers. With his introduction, I met people in charge the next day and gave them all the necessary documents to process my employment. We even talked about my monthly wage scale and other conditions, including when and how to obtain work visa, which would be valid for one full year of stay in this country and could be renewed as long as I continue teaching. Even though the wage is not much, the work visa was attractive- it was hard to resist. However after they found out about my major in study from the ¡®Certificate of graduation, they sent me an e-mail message saying that my application was denied because there is no opening for foreign English teacher at that time. But we know the real reason is because of my major-Christianity. Anyway, it was at least a good experience and again learned more about them through this. My second opportunity came a week or so ago when I met the executive director of a Korean International School. He has a foreign English teacher from the U.S. but he would like to have a English teacher who also speaks Korean because his students are still young and are only beginners at learning English. After knowing that I just completed studying TESOL, he offered me a position to teach in his school. The only thing is that the school year will end in December. He urged me to work for the school next year but I had to refuse because of my plan to take my sabbatical leave in March 2009. I told him I would consider teaching English during their English Camp scheduled for the winter break. It will be a good experience for me too. My third and important opportunity was to come by very soon. When I confirmed that my one full year sabbatical leave will start from next March, I started to search for opportunity to work in Korea. A friend of mine suggested to me to teach English at one of the small rural school in Junlanamdo and since he is from that area, he could highly recommend me to work there. With his help, the necessary documents were sent to the person in charge and we are waiting for the answer. I had confidence that I will be able to teach English well and that I will get that opportunity. It is just a matter of where and when. During TESOL study I learned a lot. My confidence level increased and the newly learned skills and techniques of teaching would be useful for my future teaching. I came to understand that the learner should be considered first, and I should encourage and praise the learners instead of criticize them. I also learned about importance of student participation in class because it is vital that students try hard to find answers themselves. I was also taught to use real situations whenever possible, to help students learn more vividly. As a person who studied TESOL and is living outside Korea, I would like to say to those in Korea who love to study English and are thinking to teach... there are lots of opportunities to teach English in third world countries. Just prepare with TESOL certificate and explore yourself. It will be a good experience to live in other countries for some time, to broaden your thinking and enlighten your vision. I thank the teachers who taught me during my TESOL study and also the Times-tesol. I wish them all the best and strength to overcome this tough economic situation we are all facing. November 15, 2008 In Kunming, China Andy Seiyong Park "
